Alpha AssetsKarl T. Ulrich

Colophon

Most of this book was written between 2020 and 2022 as a book about firms. The project stalled, and was revived in 2026 once highly competent language models became widely available. The 2026 revision, which rebuilt the book around advantage for people as well as organizations and added the chapters on what records can reveal, on how luck becomes an asset, and on what success should mean, was drafted with Claude Fable 5.1 from the author's manuscript, papers and notes, and then revised by the author. Tim Gray, the author's long-time and human editor, then scrubbed the full text.

The manuscript lives in a GitHub repository, one folder per chapter, with every citation held in a visible verification queue until it has been checked against its source. The chapters were rendered automatically at alphaassets.com as they were written, and the book was drafted in public with comments invited from friends and colleagues. The production files were generated by the repository's own build, which typesets the Markdown chapters in XeLaTeX using the memoir class and the TeX Gyre Pagella typeface, at six by nine inches, on every commit.
